Physicists tell us that in order to make sense of the universe around us, they think not of objects, but of events when creating equations for their calculations. So even a rock, a car, a mountain—-is not an object, but a temporary coming together of molecules. I do understand the phenomenon of entropy; everything degrades and eventually we all die. But somehow this idea changes everything for me and I see the world completely differently after having read about it. This temporariness is not tragic to me, but in fact it makes everything all the more beautiful and precious. This piece explores the notion of different rates of decay. The clouds are an example of molecules coming together and then breaking apart. We can see those changes happening as we watch. The starling murmuration even more so. The desert sand, used to be rocks and some of those rocks used to be mountains. The cars, left by humans will take a long long time to return to dust or more likely a pile of rust. Perhaps the humans are already gone? I see beauty in that process of change and in that decay. A reminder to live in the moment because it is so very temporary.
