Spores

The idea for “Spores” has been floating around in my head for a while. Ever since this one day last summer, when I went for a walk in the woods. In a small clearing in the forest, I came across a strange miniature garden. In amongst the mosses and lichens on the forest floor were hundreds of tiny colourful mushrooms. Purple, pink, white, yellow and orange. They were sprouting up everywhere——so densely that it was tricky for me not to step on them. It was other-worldly. I imagined that giant mushroom spores had landed here from another planet in order to reproduce themselves. The spores were giant sized in this fantasy because at the time I had been reading about an asteroid that is heading our way. If left to follow it’s current trajectory, the asteroid Bennu will collide with earth in 2182. It has happened before. There is evidence that asteroids may have brought organic molecules to our planet that contributed to the beginnings of life here. It is fascinating that some of the components utilized by the first primordial cells may have come from elsewhere——-off planet ! These two concepts, the magical mushroom spores and this asteroid, have entangled themselves in my head and become as one.
The micro and macro are inverted, speaking to the idea that not only is everything connected here on earth but with the rest of the cosmos as well. Microscopic / intergalactic——it’s all somehow linked.
